A Trip to Sharjah Archaeology Museum
A Trip to Sharjah Archaeology Museum
Before leaving for holidays, we made sure to visit the Sharjah Archaeology Museum.
Being an archaeologist myself it had been on my to-do list for a while but as it turned out it is also fantastic for children.
It offers a good overview of the UAE’s rich history, from the Stone Age to Alexander the Great. Besides the large permanent exhibition, “Deir el-medina, Village of The Pharao’s artists” is on until August 31st and a stunning activity for children.
If you can make it there before it ends, you won’t regret it!
The biggest attraction is “The Dig”, where children can dress up as archaeologists and look for artefacts in the sand, which are in fact replicas of objects you can find in the museum.
Besides there are interactive displays and many activities available throughout the exhibitions, from ceramic restoration to colouring hieroglyphs on the museum’s wall!
In addition, special workshops can be booked for children aged 7-12 years such as “hieroglyphic writings”, “papyrus making”, “pharao’s clothing”, “ancient Egyptian art’s secrets”, “decorations on pharao’s coffins”.
Entry to the museum costs 5 dhs for children aged 2-12 and 10 dhs for adults, seniors go free.
Timings are from 8AM - 8PM daily and 4PM - 8PM on Fridays.
Workshops are free of charge as far as I am aware of. Until August 11, holiday camps are run daily at the Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilization, the Maritime Museum and the Al Mahatta Museum.
